Our new guided walk at MASQ – Multicultural and Artistic Spaces at Qaitbey’s—  explores the domes of Cairo’s Northern Cemetery, tracing their architectural development across centuries. Moving through the Desert of the Mamluks, the tour considers domes not only as distinctive forms, but as layered sites of memory, reflecting those buried beneath them and the wider urban and cultural contexts in which they were built.

The walk examines the evolution of building materials construction techniques and architectural form in Cairo’s domes through centuries, from early Mamluk structures through the flourishing of  late Mamluk period, to the revival in the late 19th century. It offers a focused reading of continuity and change within the “City of the Dead” through on-site observation and discussion.

Led by Agnieszka Dobrowolska, Director of ARCHiNOS Architecture, and drawing on over three decades of research and conservation in the area, the tour is grounded in long-term engagement with the site and its built fabric.

The walking tour is part of the full-day programme “Under the Canopy of Cairo’s Domes”, at MASQ, including a bazaar, a lecture, exhibition opening, and live music. The programme is supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
